ARCHITECTURAL FORM & HERITAGE

Native to the coastal regions and coral reefs of New Caledonia (most notably the Isle of Pines), the Cook Pine (Araucaria columnaris) is a magnificent, prehistoric-looking conifer. Named after Captain James Cook, whose second voyage first recorded the species, it is defined by its strikingly narrow, columnar silhouette. Its short, horizontal branches are densely packed with overlapping, scale-like green foliage, creating a rich, textured spire. A fascinating botanical quirk of the Cook Pine is its tendency to naturally lean towards the equator—meaning in Australia, mature outdoor specimens often develop a distinct, character-filled northward tilt. While towering in its native habitat, in cultivation it serves as a sophisticated, structured vertical accent.

PLACEMENT & LIGHT

Highly adaptable and structurally striking, it thrives in both bright interior spaces and exposed exterior environments.

• Indoors: Position in a high-light location that receives abundant, bright natural light or direct morning sun. Ample light is essential to keep the foliage dense and prevent the lower branches from dropping.

• Outdoors: Thrives best in full sun. It is incredibly resilient to coastal conditions, including salt spray and wind, making it an exceptional architectural choice for exposed balconies or coastal courtyards.

SEASONAL CARE & WATERING

Cultivating Araucaria columnaris requires a balance of consistent moisture and excellent drainage, mirroring its coastal, subtropical origins. It is not as drought-tolerant as a desert succulent, but it despises wet feet.

• Indoors: Water thoroughly every 7–10 days from spring to autumn, allowing the top third of the soil to dry out before watering again. In winter, reduce the watering frequency to every 10–14 days. Always empty drainage saucers within 30 minutes to prevent root rot.

• Outdoors: Water deeply every week during the peak summer heat, ensuring the planter drains freely. Once established, it is relatively hardy, but potted specimens should be watered regularly. Reduce watering in winter, adjusting for natural rainfall.

• Note on Botanical Behaviour: Often mistaken for its cousin, the Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla), the Cook Pine can be distinguished by its much tighter, narrower canopy. It is normal for the tree to shed its lowest branches as it ages to reveal a textured, peeling trunk.

NOURISHMENT & FERTILIZING

To sustain its dense, green foliage and support steady vertical growth, nourish the tree moderately. Apply a premium, controlled-release fertilizer formulated for conifers or native evergreens at the onset of spring and again in mid-summer. Cease feeding during the autumn and winter months to allow the tree a period of natural rest.
