Fan Aloe (Kumara plicatillis) in Green, Horizontally Ribbed Cast Concrete Planter with Tripod Feet.

Sale price$880.00

Height: 90cm

Diameter: 500mm

The Fan Aloe is a fleshy, sculptural wonder. The leaves sit all layered and upright, grey green and bursting forth. In the wild, Kumara plicatilis is found only in an incredibly small area in the Western Cape of South Africa. So to have one delivered to your door in a trendy little pot is quite wild. Re the trendy little pot, the tripod feet match the tripod branches of the tree. The conical shape of the pot is ribbed and is a wonderful example of mid century, hard wearing Australian cast concrete planters. Circa 1960.

Light:

If attempting to grow indoors these need at least a few hours of direct sun. Think next to a northwest facing floor to ceiling window. Otherwise outside, because this has been acclimatised to a shady spot, I would allow it morning direct sun to begin with as it may get burnt with direct, hot afternoon sun, if moving it into a full sun position.

Water:

Too much water will kill this plant. Let the soil dry out completely between watering. You can feel the leaves are full of moisture so make sure you are sticking something like a chopstick into the soil to test for damp, clingy soil and if the soil is still damp, wait a few more days. The elevated positioning of this pot allows the soil to dry out quicker but I've found conical pots are slower to expel water after watering. When watering you want to use a watering can and slowly wet the entirety of the rootball. Remember that overwatering refers to frequency of watering, not the millilitres you put in. So a sign you've watered enough is that water is flowing into the bowl you've put beneath the pot. And then let that potting mix slowly dry out whilst the plant drinks the water, and light, wind and warmth dry it out. Black, fleshy marks on the plant are a sign of too much water.

Decrease watering dramatically throughout late autumn and winter and, if outdoors, make sure plant is not sitting in prolonged periods of rain.

Fertilizer:

Apply half strength, water soluble succulent fertilizer once every 4-6 weeks in the growing season (Sep-Mar).
