ARCHITECTURAL FORM & HERITAGE

Native to the lush, tropical moist forests of South America—spanning from Brazil to Colombia—the Long-leaf Fig (Ficus longifolia) is an elegant architectural specimen celebrated for its graceful, weeping canopy and slender, willow-like foliage. Unlike many of its broader-leafed relatives, this stunning tree offers a softer, cascading silhouette that effortlessly breaks up the hard lines of modern interior spaces.

Note on Botanical Nomenclature: In the nursery and interior design trade, this silhouette is incredibly popular and is frequently sold under the names Ficus 'Alii', Narrow Leaf Fig, or interchangeably with its Southeast Asian cousin, Ficus maclellandii. Regardless of the trade name, it is highly sought after for being significantly more resilient and far less prone to dropping leaves than other classic indoor ficus varieties.

PLACEMENT & LIGHT

Highly adaptable and structurally graceful in both interior and sheltered exterior environments.

  • Indoors: Position in a space that receives bright, indirect natural light throughout the day. While it is highly adaptable and can tolerate moderate light levels, providing bright, filtered light is the secret to maintaining a dense, lush canopy down the length of the trunk.

  • Outdoors: Thrives best in a sheltered position with dappled sunlight or part shade. Protect the canopy from harsh, direct afternoon sun and strong winds, which can scorch or damage its delicate, elongated leaves.

SEASONAL CARE & WATERING

Cultivating Ficus longifolia requires mimicking the warm, humid environments of its tropical origin: a steady rhythm of consistent moisture without waterlogging.

  • Indoors: Water thoroughly every 7–10 days from late spring to early autumn, allowing the top quarter of the soil to dry out before watering again. In winter, reduce the watering frequency to every 10–14 days. Always empty drainage saucers within 30 minutes to prevent the roots from sitting in excess water.

  • Outdoors: Water regularly during the summer heat, ensuring the planter retains a light, even moisture while draining freely. Reduce watering in winter, adjusting carefully for natural rainfall.

  • Note on Botanical Behaviour: While remarkably hardy and far less temperamental than species like the Fiddle Leaf Fig (F. lyrata) or Weeping Fig (F. benjamina), this tree may still experience minor leaf shedding when acclimatizing to a new environment, or if exposed to sudden cold drafts and extreme temperature shifts.

NOURISHMENT & FERTILIZING

To sustain its cascading canopy and encourage vigorous, evergreen foliage, nourish the tree consistently during its active growing season. Apply a premium, controlled-release foliage or indoor plant fertilizer at the onset of spring and again in mid-summer. Cease all feeding during the autumn and winter dormancy, allowing the tree to rest.

DELIVERY & LOGISTICS

Please contact us prior to purchase if there are any major barriers to delivery at your property (including stairs, narrow corridors, or lift size constraints), as these tall, architectural pieces require specialist handling and may incur increased delivery costs.
