Beautiful south American feature plant in vintage copper planter with stand. For me the focal point of the Philodendron selloum is that gorgeous trunk giving way to those springy, tropical leaves. Finished with Eucalyptus mulch.
ARCHITECTURAL FORM & HERITAGE
Native to the warm, humid subtropical regions of South America, spanning Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay, the Tree Philodendron (Philodendron selloum) is a breathtaking botanical specimen defined by its deeply lobed, lacy fronds. This rare vintage piece showcases a matured twin trunk system, characterized by prominent, eye shaped leaf scars and dramatic aerial roots that cascade down into the soil. In its native rainforest ecosystems, these thick, trunk like stems allow the plant to establish a massive, structural presence on the forest floor, absorbing ambient atmospheric moisture and anchoring its sprawling prehistoric silhouette against the elements.
PLACEMENT & LIGHT
Highly adaptable to indoor and sheltered spaces.
-
Indoors: Position in a room that receives bright, natural ambient light to mild partial shade throughout the day. It thrives in spacious areas with good airflow where its expansive leaf canopy can spread unhindered. Avoid long exposure to harsh, scorching sun.
SEASONAL CARE & WATERING
To cultivate the Philodendron selloum is to mimic the rhythms of its native subtropical forest floor: a distinct cycle of rich hydration followed by gentle evaporation. Care should reflect nature; allow the tree to experience a generous watering that thoroughly saturates the deep root system, followed by a period where the top half of the soil dries out before watering again.
-
Indoors: Slowly water the entire root ball every 7 10 days from late spring to early autumn, tailoring the frequency to the ambient humidity, airflow, and light levels of your specific space. In winter, reduce watering to every 2 3 weeks. Always ensure the vessel drains beautifully to prevent root rot in the well draining soil.
-
Note on Botanical Behaviour: The massive aerial roots wrapped around the trunks are completely natural and vital to the plant character. You can lightly mist these roots occasionally during hot summer weeks to mimic tropical forest humidity.
NOURISHMENT & FERTILIZING
To sustain its architectural silhouette and encourage the production of large, vibrant new fronds, nourish the tree moderately. Apply a premium organic liquid fertilizer formulated for tropical foliage at half strength once every 4 weeks during the active spring and summer growth phases. Cease all feeding during the autumn and winter months, allowing the specimen to rest.
