Planted in an Australian mid-century, tapered cast concrete planter with gravel to finish. Exposed root base. This tree is approximately 30 years old. This a 30 year old tree. Instantly drawn to this guy when hunting for specimens in a collectors backyard. Its two trees that kinda dance the tango together. The roots naturally exposed kinda stepping like Paul Mercurio and Gina Carides. We cut off the dead branches, treated it with neem oil and repotted with fresh and nutrient rich potting mix in this beautiful but minimal big concrete planter. The minimal form of the planter kinda lets the dancing, but Weeping, figs take centre stage. 

ARCHITECTURAL FORM & HERITAGE

Native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, India, and Northern Australia. While in its native outdoor habitat it can grow into a massive, sprawling shade tree with complex aerial roots, in cultivation it height and growth will be restricted by the pot size. 

PLACEMENT & LIGHT

This tree thrives on consistency and requires a carefully chosen, permanent location away from extreme temperature fluctuations.

  • Indoors: Position in a space that receives abundant, bright, indirect natural light throughout the day. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun which can scorch the leaves, as well as heavily shaded corners. Critically, keep the tree away from air conditioning vents, heaters, and drafty doorways.

  • Outdoors: Thrives best in a sheltered courtyard or patio with dappled sunlight or part shade. It must be protected from intense afternoon sun, frost, and strong winds.

SEASONAL CARE & WATERING

Cultivating Ficus benjamina requires maintaining a delicate balance of consistent moisture—it prefers neither completely dry soil nor waterlogged roots.

  • Indoors: Water thoroughly every 7–10 days from late spring to early autumn, allowing the top third of the soil to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, reduce the watering frequency to every 10–14 days. Always empty drainage saucers within 30 minutes; sitting in excess water will quickly lead to root rot.

  • Outdoors: Water regularly during the summer heat, ensuring the planter retains a light, even moisture while draining freely. Reduce watering in winter, adjusting carefully for natural rainfall.

  • Note on Botanical Behaviour: The Weeping Fig is famously sensitive to change. It is entirely normal for the tree to shed a noticeable amount of leaves when moved to a new environment, during seasonal shifts, or if exposed to drafts. Once it acclimatises to its new permanent home, it will stabilise and push out a fresh flush of foliage. The best approach is to find the perfect spot and avoid moving it.

NOURISHMENT & FERTILIZING

To sustain its dense, weeping canopy and encourage vibrant green foliage, nourish the tree consistently during its active growing season. Apply a premium, controlled-release foliage or indoor plant fertiliser at the onset of spring and again in mid-summer. Cease all feeding during the autumn and winter dormancy to allow the tree to rest.
